The Department of Treasury has announced a nationwide public consultation on the Draft Competition and Consumer Protection Bill 2026, a major legislative reform aimed at modernising Papua New Guinea’s competition and consumer protection framework.
The proposed Bill seeks to consolidate existing competition and consumer protection provisions into a dedicated and modern legislative framework designed to promote fair and efficient competition, strengthen consumer rights, improve regulatory certainty and support private sector investment and economic growth.
The Department is inviting businesses, SMEs, consumers, government agencies, industry associations, professional bodies, civil society organisations and other interested stakeholders to participate in the consultation process and provide feedback on the proposed reforms.
Public consultation workshops will be held across PNG’s four regions throughout September, commencing in Port Moresby on 9 September, followed by Kokopo on 15 September, Lae on 23 September and Mt Hagen on 29 September 2026.
Feedback received will assist Treasury in refining the proposed legislative framework before it is submitted for final consideration by Government.
Written submissions on the Draft Bill are also invited, with the consultation period closing on Friday, 16 October 2026.
